I have no formal training but have learned to cook on my own for about 10 years. I’m making a career change, does anyone think being a line cook at a place like dicks wings will be hard?

Why skin side up? Maybe im not classy, but when the customer gets the plate they'll just have a bunch of skin they have to peel off and leave to the side. Unless they eat it with that particular kind of fish? assuming its fish thats what it looked like.

Unsung heroes of the world. The vast majority of humans couldn't handle this type of job. It's weird that it's looked down on at all. At the highest level these guys are performing tasks that are more physically and mentally draining than operating a commercial aircraft.

"How much longer?" "Ok I'll be back" How about this one, "You know that one order I put in with the, um, it has the mashed stuff and its got like that rice and is tomatoie? Well I was walking by the customer who ordered it and she was saying since she's going to order cake anyway if that could be in place of rice on the bottom or if you could even give me a ramicken thingy they could have to taste it and they don't want holiday sauce um...hey where are you going I'm still talking?" Me: "My foods burning you dumb bitch. By the way its holandaise not holiday sauce"

Impressive what these guys do back there. I watched another video of two guys doing breakfast and it was also impressive how fast they had to work to get all that food out. Because I like to cook at home, I used to think it would be “fun” to be a a cook/chef. Over the years I’ve realized how crazy I was for thinking this. Most people wouldn’t last one shift doing this and these people do it EVERY day.

Keep at it.. don't quit! Learning a new station takes about two months of hard work. It gets easier as you go in; come in earlier thank your scheduled time even if you don't get paid, that way you have time to set yourself up. As you get better you will be able to come at your time. In the struggle is where we grow! If it was easy everyone would do it!

    • @commonlemme

I've been at it for about 4 years now and every new line is tough. OP is right - about 2 months to get the hang of it. Expect to have tickets back up and people holler for stuff that is NOT ready - this is super normal. You'll get better. Keep improving, listen to your coworkers and your chef. Take their criticism in stride, once you get it down grinding through tickets in a rush is one of the best feelings out there :) Good luck!!

Did restaurant work for 2 years. 2nd year as a line cook. It was good work, but it’s hard work. Met a lot of good people doing that. Also saw a lot of people come n’ go real fast. You wanna see if you’re somewhat tough? Work on the line. It’s quite amusing, but I watched one dude just break down crying one night. It wasn’t a hard night (maybe 200 seats) and he had to go close dish. He was falling behind on the dishes, so I got pulled from the front (seating customers) and was told to help get him out. Spent 30-45 minutes working fast to clear it out. I step away to go back upfront and notice him looking upset. He disappeared for about 15 minutes and the pit was getting a little full. He came back and did a half ass job, so I got pulled again to help. I go back he starts crying a little bit, and he stepped away to “go to the bathroom”. Didn’t think anything of it. 10 minutes roll by and I’m wondering where the fuck the dude is. Boss came asking about where he was. Told him I didn’t know, so we go to the other guys and they don’t know. Turns out, this fucker just up and left.

I just had to quit my first kitchen job.(no prior food service work). Making hot and cold sandwiches/subs, breakfast/lunch/dinner.I only lasted 4 days but was split by a 2 day break. I found myself not ever being hungry and got pretty sick after not eating. I quickly found the kitchen is not my niche. Mad respect for what these guys do.I loved how busy it was and also found myself slogging through the busy lunch hour. I wish I could have stuck it out and got better with time but health had to come first at this point.

@@evanj6846 I definitely would have but I’ve got prior stomach issues that were made worse from smelling all the grease.
